Why the Shoes are Unique
The patented Newton Active Membrane TechnologyTM promotes forefoot running, and is layered between four actuator lugs and four hollow chambers positioned in the shoe's mid-sole.
On impact, these actuators stretch the membrane as they drive into the hollow chambers (the "action"). The process absorbs more shock than traditional running shoes, creating an enhanced cushioned feel as you land.
During the toe-off phase of your stride, the membrane thrusts the actuators back out of the chambers, returning the impact energy into forward propulsion (the "reaction").
It's the science of motion.
Whether training or racing, Newton Active Membrane Technology™ provides greater shock absorption, greater energy return while promoting the natural and more efficient forefoot strike of barefoot running.
Newtons Features
- Less Energy Loss Actuator lugs return impact energy into forward motion. Laboratory testing confirms up to 58% energy return.
- More Cushioning The vertical displacement of the actuator lugs create greater cushioning than foam.
- Less Friction Less surface area, greater levering and flexibility equals less time on the ground and less friction.
- More Mobility Newton's Flex Groove between the metatarsals and toes allows the foot to flex as if barefoot.
- More Natural Biomechanics Newton Active Membrane Technology™ allows the foot to respond to the ground as though it was barefoot.
- Less Injury Besides providing more cushioning, actuator lugs work independently so that misaligned metatarsals or leg length differences are inconsequential.
- Less Weight Newton Active Membrane Technology™ weighs ounces less than traditional trainers. In fact newton training shoes weigh about the same as a typical racing flat.
Are Newton Shoes Right for You?
Newton running shoes are designed specifically for people who are already mid-foot/fore-foot runners, or for people who are working on transitioning from a heel-strike to the more efficient mid-foot/fore-foot stride. If you are transitioning we recommend the following before you purchase the Newton shoes:
- Enlist the assistance of an experienced coach who teaches forefoot running methods
- Read as much as possible about mid-foot/forefoot-running
Pre-existing conditions or injuries may mean Newtons are not right for you. If you have an injury, a biomechanical issue, an anomaly or a predisposition to a particular type of injury, consult your physician, coach or orthotics supplier before using Newton shoes. Another contraindication for using Newton running shoes is if you are a dedicated heel striker and don't wish to improve your running efficiency and style.
